(n). H.M,Ships are not to be despatched to localities along
the seast within Chinese jurisdiction to obtain indemnities for rebberies committed, or to secure the release of persons held to rangon. În all such enses the native authorities are to be called on, through the Consul, to take immediate measures of redress, and should the means at their disposal not be sufficient to effect the object in view, the question of so- operation should be desided by the Senior Offiser,
(b). Landing in pursuit of pirates within Chinese juris-
diation is strictly forbidden.
(s). The landing of armed parties to obtain information is
objectionable; the enquiries should be made, when possible, by the officer in eammanë,
(4). Parties are on no account to be landed from H.H.Ships
within Chinese jurisdiction to destroy houses or villages, or even search them, on the grounds of their inhabitants being engaged in asta of pirasy. The Chinese officials who my accompany H.K.Ships in their expeditions have no authority to request that such measures should be adopted.

11. CO-OPERATION WITH CHITËSE AUTHORITIES, – A Chinese vessel pillaged in the Canton or other rivers should appeal to the native authorities for redress, but if she is a colonial registered vessel er one trading to Hongkong, the particulars should be at ones referr- ed to H.M.Consul-General at Canton, who will sall upon the chinese Authorities to take proper setion.
14. In considering applications which may be made to the officers in comand by sempetent Chinese authorities to aid in the suppression of piracy, a distinetion is to be carefully draw between the repression of sets of robbery upon er near the coast, which ought rather to be centrelled by the police of China than by X.X. Ships, and these predatory and vielent sets which may more properly be classed under the name of piracy. At the same time every assist- anee within reasonable bounds is to be given to the Chinese authori- ties in their endeavours to give security to the seasting trading of the sountry.
13. SUSPECTED JUIKS. – Chinese vessels are not to be attacked unless the officers in sommand have been applied to by a competent Chinese authority (through H.M.Consul), prepared to furnish positive evidence of the piratical character of the vessel to be attacked, ner unless on the son coast of China a vessel is detested in the ast ́of pirasy.
